چکیده

Cover Figure: Purple bacteria live at the bottom of ponds or lakes, and some purple bacteria can harvest light and produce energy through photosynthesis. Their photosynthetic apparatus are found inside the bacterial membrane, consisting of several proteins. One of these proteins is the ring-like Light Harvesting Complex 2, the protein investigated in this case study. All files can be found in the lh2-casestudy-files folder.

Supramolecular organization of photosystem I and light-harvesting complex I in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

We report a structural characterization by electron microscopy and image analysis of a supramolecular complex consisting of photosystem I and light-harvesting complex I from the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The complex is a monomer, has longest dimensions of 21.3 and 18.2 nm in projection, and is significantly larger than the corresponding complex in spinach. Comparison wit...

Strong antenna-enhanced fluorescence of a single light-harvesting complex shows photon antibunching

The nature of the highly efficient energy transfer in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes is a subject of intense research. Unfortunately, the low fluorescence efficiency and limited photostability hampers the study of individual light-harvesting complexes at ambient conditions. Here we demonstrate an over 500-fold fluorescence enhancement of light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2) at the single...

CP29, a monomeric light-harvesting complex II protein, is essential for state transitions in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

In oxygen-evolving photosynthesis, the two photosystems, photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII), function in parallel, and their excitation levels must be balanced to maintain an optimal photosynthetic rate under various light conditions. State transitions balance excitation energy between the two photosystems by redistributing light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) proteins. Here we descri...

Comparative Analysis of Light-Harvesting Antennae and State Transition in chlorina and cpSRP Mutants.

State transitions in photosynthesis provide for the dynamic allocation of a mobile fraction of light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) to photosystem II (PSII) in state I and to photosystem I (PSI) in state II. In the state I-to-state II transition, LHCII is phosphorylated by STN7 and associates with PSI to favor absorption cross-section of PSI. Here, we used Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) muta...

Lack of the light-harvesting complex CP24 affects the structure and function of the grana membranes of higher plant chloroplasts.

The photosystem II (PSII) light-harvesting antenna in higher plants contains a number of highly conserved gene products whose function is unknown. Arabidopsis thaliana plants depleted of one of these, the CP24 light-harvesting complex, have been analyzed. CP24-deficient plants showed a decrease in light-limited photosynthetic rate and growth, but the pigment and protein content of the thylakoid...
